Tactics

The tactical principles of the sport and the drills used to train each.

5-1 defence

Five defenders on 6 m and an advanced defender at 9-10 m who disrupts the centre back, intercepts and reduces long-range shots. The line of 5 must cover the space behind the advanced defender.

Drills: 5-1 defence with an advanced defender

3-2-1 defence

Offensive defence in depth: three on 6 m, two half-forward defenders on the backs, one advanced defender. It breaks up the ball circulation and forces mistakes, but leaves space for the pivot and behind the lines; it needs mobile defenders.

Drills: 3-2-1 defence (offensive)

The fast break (first and second wave)

First wave: the wings break immediately after the ball is won, and the goalkeeper sends them the long pass. Second wave (sustained fast break): the centre back and the backs arrive at speed and attack the unorganised defence. The quick throw-off after a goal is part of the same idea.

Drills: Direct fast break (first wave), Sustained fast break (second wave) 3 v 2 / 4 v 3

Retreating

After losing the ball or a shot, the team sprints back through the middle, the nearest player delays the fast break and the defence reorganises on the move.

Drills: Retreating on defence

7 v 6 attack (no goalkeeper)

The goalkeeper is replaced by a court player for numerical superiority in attack. It increases the chances of a free shot, but any turnover can mean a goal into the empty net.

Drills: 7 v 6 attack (goalkeeper pulled)

Numerical superiority and inferiority

During a 2-minute suspension, the team with the extra player looks for the free man through quick circulation (usually the wing); the short-handed team tightens towards the centre and pressures the 9 m shooters.

Drills: Power play 6 v 5 / short-handed 5 v 6
